Does Your Yard Have a Landscaping Theme?

Are You Landscaping Your New House?

by Dan Mckinney

Have you recently moved into a new home that was built exactly to your own specifications? If so, you are probably now enjoying living in every square inch of your new home. Lucky for you that it was built before the upcoming holidays, right?  Next on your list might be having the front and back yards custom landscaped so they will be as beautiful as your actual house.

Do you have a landscaping design in mind already? If that's not the case, from getting ideas from other gardens to arranging for custom landscaping services, here are some ideas that might help you:

Get Inspiration From Other Gardens

Think of getting your landscape design inspiration from two major sources. The first source might come right from other houses in your own neighborhood, or from other beautiful neighborhoods. The owners of the houses might not be thrilled to see a car parked in front of their home as you take pictures, but that doesn't mean that you can't take somebody with you who can write down the things you like at specific homes.

For example, if you love the look of pampas grass as a focal point, make a note of that. If you were captivated by statuary as part of the landscaping, make a note of that, too. Maybe you like the idea of having ferns hanging from trees. Then, of course, have your co-pilot write that down as well.

An additional source for getting ideas might be home and garden magazines. For instance, in one magazine you might note that different plants like cacti, grasses, and flowering plants are grouped together in an artistic way. Cut that picture out for further use. Maybe one of the magazines features a koi pond or a multi-tiered water fountain -- you can add that picture to your collection of notes, too.

Custom Landscaping Services

Once you have all of your ideas collected in one place, say an accordion file, meet with a custom landscaping service. The landscapers will have the training and the experience to make your own ideas a reality. In addition, they'll more than likely add even more interest to the ideas you bring to the table. For example, if you express that you want pampas grass as part of the landscape, and you also want statuary, the landscaper might suggest that you place something like a St. Francis of Assisi statue or an angel statue amid the pampas grass.

The landscapers will also know which trees will grow best in your part of the country. For example, if you live in Texas, right now is a good time to plant a Monterrey Oak. You might have to wait on some of the plants you want, as winter is coming up. However, the landscapers can still help you to get ready for spring and summer of 2020, and then they'll be ready to get to work to make your garden a real show-place.
